There she stands, an ancient and venerable elf. She is old even by elven standards, and her once lustrous green hair is now a faded, wispy white. Her face is lined with wrinkles, but her eyes still shine with the wisdom of ages. She is a druid, one who has pledged her life to protecting the natural world. And she is my grandmother.
My grandmother first began playing Dungeons and Dragons when she was just a young girl. It was the early days of the game, when it was still new and fresh and full of possibility. She played an elf ranger, roaming the forests of her imagination in search of adventure. As she grew older, she continued to play, eventually taking on the role of a druid.
Nowadays, my grandmother is no longer as active in the gaming community as she once was. But she still takes great joy in telling me about her adventures from long ago. She regales me with stories of daring escapades and heroic deeds, of dragons slain and evil wizards vanquished. And I can’t help but be inspired by her tales. After all, if an old lady like my grandma can have such amazing adventures, then maybe I can too someday.
