She had always been fascinated by stories of heroic adventurers, vanquishing evil monsters and saving helpless maidens. So when she was finally old enough to play Dungeons and Dragons, she was thrilled. She created her character – a young female fighter with long blue hair – and set off on her first quest.
The game was everything she’d hoped for and more. She loved the feeling of triumph when her character vanquished a foe, and the sense of camaraderie when adventuring with her friends. Plus, she got to use her imagination in ways she never could have before. It was the perfect escape from reality.
As she continued to play, she became more and more invested in her character. She started staying up late to play, and skipping school to go on quests. And the more she played, the less interested she became in anything else. Soon, all she cared about was winning the game.
But then one day, something strange happened. Her Elf character suddenly died – not from being killed by a monster or enemy, but from some inexplicable reason within the game itself. She was devastated. She didn’t understand how it could happen, and it felt like she’d lost a part of herself.
She quit playing Dungeons and Dragons after that, and never went back again.
